why we started Scentspired: luxury fragrance without the £200 markups
There is a quiet scandal at the heart of the luxury perfume industry. Walk into Harrods, Liberty, or any high-end department store across the UK, and you will see 50ml bottles retailing between £200 and £350. The packaging is heavy, the glass is cut like crystal, and the marketing campaign features a Hollywood celebrity gazing moodily across an empty beach.
What nobody at the beauty counter will tell you is what is actually inside that bottle. The raw fragrance oil—the compound that creates the scent on your skin—typically accounts for less than 5% of the retail price. The rest is marketing budgets, licensing agreements, flagship real estate, and exorbitant wholesale margins.
Scentspired was founded on a simple premise: great fragrance is a question of chemistry and craftsmanship, not billboard budgets. By cutting out celebrity endorsements, proprietary bottle moulds, and luxury retail markups, we can invest directly in the juice itself.
We source premium fragrance oils from the world's leading perfume houses in Grasse, France, and formulate at Eau de Parfum and Extrait de Parfum concentrations (20% to 30% oil). The result is inspired luxury perfumes that match the scent profile, depth, and longevity of the originals—at around a couple of tenners.
Traditional luxury houses spend tens of millions each year maintaining brand prestige. Between international licensing fees, supermodel contracts, and the margins taken by department stores, consumer prices are inflated tenfold before a single spray leaves the nozzle.
Because so much money is tied up in marketing, many designer brands quietly dilute their formulas to Eau de Toilette concentrations (8-12% oil) to protect profit margins, leaving you with a scent that fades before lunch.
We do things backwards. We start by investing in the highest grade perfume oils, working with master perfumers to capture the exact olfactory pyramid of the world's most sought-after fragrances.
